The No. 99 team will be bringing chassis RK384-50 to Phoenix. This chassis last raced at Loudon, where Darnell started 11th and finished second.

In 2007 Darnell has accrued one win (Kansas), three top-five and eight top-10 finishes.

The Northern Tool + Equipment Ford will have a different look at Phoenix, sporting the winning scheme of Jim and Kevin Cargo from Northern Tool +Equipment’s “Paint My Ride” promotion.

ERIK DARNELL ON PHOENIX INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY. . .

“I’ve raced at Phoenix a bunch in the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Division, but I’ve only made one start in the truck series there. It’s a unique one-mile track that provides some very good racing action. We’re bringing the same truck we finished second with at Loudon earlier in the year, so we’ve got some confidence heading into the weekend.”

MATT PUCCIA ON PHOENIX INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY. . .

“Phoenix is a very unique track, it’s got a very different shape and characteristics unlike any other track. We ran well at Loudon earlier in the year, and we should be able to apply some of what we did there to this weekend’s race. We need a couple of strong finishes to finish out the year, and I think we can do that here at Phoenix.”

Darnell’s No. 99 to Sport Winning Scheme at Phoenix

CONCORD, N.C. (November 6, 2007) – When the Northern Tool + Equipment Ford F-150 of NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver Erik Darnell hits the track at Phoenix International Raceway this weekend, it will do so with a new look. The winning scheme from Northern Tool’s “Paint My Ride” promotion will adorn the No. 99, marking the first time that a special paint scheme has been run on the Roush Fenway Racing entry this season.

Northern Tool + Equipment launched the “Paint My Ride” promotion in September, challenging aspiring designers to come up with their own paint scheme for Darnell’s No. 99. When the dust settled, Jim and Kevin Cargo of Oswego, Ill. and their scheme “Bringin’ the Heat” were chosen as the winners.

“We’re huge NASCAR fans,” said Jim. “We can’t wait to see the paint scheme on the track this weekend.”

All designs submitted were placed on NorthernTool.com for popular voting. The winning paint scheme was chosen by popular vote and judges. The Cargos will be flown to the race, where they will receive hotel accommodations, two race-day tickets, pit passes, $250 in spending cash and a meet-and-greet with Erik Darnell and the No. 99 team.

“I’ve seen the paint scheme at the shop, but I’m ready to see it on the track this weekend,” said Darnell. “Special paint schemes always generate a pretty cool buzz at the track. I think it all started back in the 90’s when Dale Earnhardt’s No. 3 car had a silver scheme for the All-Star race. That really kicked off a trend of running different schemes for various promotions for sponsors. But this one’s pretty cool. Knowing that a fan designed this and will get to see it in person, that’s a pretty cool deal. I think it would look even better in Victory Lane, so we’ll do our best to put it there this weekend.”

Darnell's Night Cut Short in Phoenix
Erik Darnell, No. 99 Northern Tool + Equipment Ford F-150
~RFR

PHOENIX, AZ. (November 9, 2007) – Erik Darnell and the Northern Tool + Equipment team looked forward to Phoenix since their second-place finish at Loudon in September. The driver of the No. 99 Ford has a strong record on flat tracks, and has had success at the desert oval in the past. In the early going of Friday night’s 150-lap race, Darnell appeared to have a truck capable of contending for the win. His night was ended early when contact from behind put him out of the race long before the checkered flag dropped.

Darnell took the green flag in the 17th position, and reported in the opening laps that his No. 99 Ford was extremely free. Two caution periods in the opening 15 laps allowed Darnell and the Northern Tool + Equipment team time to make a plan for adjustments when the time came to hit pit road for service.

Darnell patiently rode out his handling problems, waiting for the opportunity to come to pit road. When the No. 10 truck wrecked at lap 35, it gave the Northern Tool + Equipment crew the opportunity to come to pit road for service. Crew chief Matt Puccia elected to take four tires, fuel and remove a spring rubber from the right rear.

Darnell lined up for the lap 40 restart in the 16th position. Unfortunately for him, he would not have much of an opportunity to improve on his position. The No. 75 truck of Clay Rogers made heavy contact with the rear of Darnell’s Ford, sending the No. 99 hard into the outside wall. The damage was too severe for the team to repair, resulting in a 35th place finish for the Northern Tool + Equipment team.

“We were run over by the No. 75 truck,” said Darnell. “I know we were racing for position in the top-15 there, but it's still early in the race and he turned us around. It's too bad because our Northern Tool + Equipment Ford F-150 was pretty decent tonight. After the first pit stop we were able to drive up through the field a bit. That's two weeks in a row that we've had a wreck. We're racing to finish the season in the top-10 in points and this really hurts our chances. All we can do is go to Homestead and try to win there."

Darnell and the No. 99 Northern Tool + Equipment team remain 10th position in the Craftsman Truck Series point standings with only one race remaining in the 2007 season. The Craftsman Truck Series races next at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Friday, November 16, 2007.
