Bank of America 500 - Greg Biffle Notes
Greg Biffle
NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series: Bank of America 500
Saturday October 13
7:00 PM Eastern - ABC/PRN

Fast Facts

In the Coca-Cola 600 this spring, Greg Biffle cut a tire on lap 45, causing irreparable damage to the No. 16 Ford Fusion.
Biffle has two wins, five top-five finishes and eight top-10 finishes in 13 NASCAR Busch Series starts at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.
With the 23rd place finish last week at Talladega, Biffle and the team are currently 16th in the point standings, 118 points out of the 13th position. He is only two points behind Casey Mears in the 15th position and three points behind Ryan Newman in the 14th position.
This weekend Biffle will run the 3M Ford Fusion.

Greg Biffle
Team: No. 16 3M Ford Fusion
Crew Chief: Greg Erwin
Chassis: RK-431 California ‘07 – finished 15th
Michigan ‘07 – finished 38th
Chicago ’07 – finished 11th

Biffle on racing at Lowe’s Motor Speedway:
“Racing at home is fun and a little stressful at the same time. We’re taking a car that is very similar to the one we won with at Kansas, so hopefully we’ll have some luck with it this weekend. We cut a tire early in the Coca-Cola 600 and hit the wall hard enough to take us out of the race at that point. We’ll need to work on overall grip. That seems to be a problem for us every time we go there and especially with the new tire compound. We lost a couple of positions in the points at Talladega and our goal these last few weeks is to get those back and maybe even pick up 13th if we can.”

Crew Chief Greg Erwin on racing at Lowe’s Motor Speedway:
“We’re taking the car that we most recently finished 11th with at Chicago. It’s been re-bodied with a newer style body that is very similar to the body on the car we won with at Kansas. The things that you focus on at Charlotte are getting the car to turn through the center and working on an overall lack of grip. We’ll have the same tires we had in the spring, so we just have to adjust the handling and pit strategy to work for us with the tire wear we expect.”

Biffle’s Shot at a Win Dashed by Late-Race Accident
Greg Biffle and the #16 3M Ford Racing Team
Lowe's Motor Speedway/October 12, 2007

CONCORD, N.C. (October 12, 2007) –  Greg Biffle did everything right Friday night at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in order to win his first Busch Series race of the year.  He won the pole, led six different times for a total of 53 laps, but in the end he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.  Biffle ended up 30th after getting caught up in an accident with 60 laps to go while running in second place.

Biffle won his third pole of the 2007 Busch season and knew he had a car capable of winning the Dollar General 300.  When the green flag dropped he pulled away from the field and led the first 28 laps until the first caution.  His 3M Ford Fusion was fast so the team elected not to make any changes during the first stop.  Biffle lost two positions in the pits when a lug nut fell off the right front, but it did not slow him down.

The race resumed on lap 32 and he quickly moved into second place, and then took the lead again on lap 45.  The car began to tighten-up and Biffle lost the lead to his Roush Fenway teammate, Carl Edwards, on lap 58.  He was able to maintain second place while he tried running a different line around the bottom of the track.

A caution on lap 87 brought the lead-lap cars down pit road.  Biffle pitted for new tires, fuel, wedge and air pressure adjustments to free-up the car.  The team had a quick 14.9-second stop which helped Biffle return to the track in second place for the restart on lap 91.

When the race resumed Biffle and Edwards traded the lead for several laps.  Biffle settled into second place again until a caution on lap 127.  Little did Biffle know at the time, but Clint Bowyer’s pit strategy during that stop would affect the outcome of his race.

On lap 128 Biffle pitted for four new tires, as well as wedge and air pressure adjustments.  The team completed its work in 13.8 seconds, but Bowyer was the first off pit road since he only took fuel.  Biffle was second behind Boywer for the restart on lap 133.

One lap later a multi-car accident occurred behind Biffle which eliminated his toughest competition, Edwards.  Biffle and the 3M team believed this was their race to win since their Ford Fusion was the strongest on the track.

The race resumed on lap 138 with Bowyer still leading on old tires.  Biffle quickly chased him down, but a lap later Bowyer spun while trying to hold off Biffle.  Unfortunately, Biffle had nowhere to go and made contact with Bowyer and the wall.  Biffle’s night was over with a 30th place finish.

“I’m pretty upset,” Biffle said.  “These 3M guys work so hard and these Busch Series races are so hard to win.  We finally had a car to win with and Carl was fast too.  We were saving a little bit for the end, but then Carl crashed out and it didn’t feel like there was anybody who was gonna beat us.  It’s unfortunate.  Clint didn’t take any tires.  He was trying to hold us off and we had four new tires on the car.  Normally, experienced guys like that don’t make those kinds of mistakes.  It’s inexperienced guys driving over their heads that make mistakes like that.  We all make mistakes and it just got out from under him.  It’s unfortunate that we tore up this good race car.”

The No. 16 3M Ford Fusion fell one position and is now 14th in the NASCAR Busch Series owners’ point standings.  The Busch Series will race again on Saturday, October 27 at Memphis Motorsports Park.  It will be televised live on ESPN2 at 3:30 p.m. (EDT).

Biffle Fights Ill-Handling Racecar; Takes 27th Place Finish in 3M Fusion
Greg Biffle and the #16 3M Ford Racing Team
Lowe's Motor Speedway/October 13, 2007

Concord, N.C. (October 13, 2007) –  Greg Biffle and the No. 16 3M team raced close to home in North Carolina this weekend.  Lowe’s Motor Speedway is less than five miles from Roush Fenway Racing, so the team got to stay at home this week and spend a little extra time with their families.  They were still hard at work at the track on Thursday morning and were able to run well in practice and get a top-10 qualifying effort.  Shortly after the start of the race on Saturday night Biffle, however, reported that the car was loose and they just weren’t able to correct the handling over the course of the night despite multiple adjustments.  Biffle was credited with a 27th place finish and remains 16th in the point standings.

Biffle took the green flag on Saturday night from the outside of row five.  He initially reported that the car felt good and was running eighth when the first caution flag of the night flew.  The team opted for two tires, fuel, a track bar adjustment and an air pressure adjustment and sent Biffle out in the eighth position for the restart on lap 24.  On lap 36 as Clint Bowyer was taking the eighth spot away, Biffle reported that the car was getting loose.  He began to quickly lose positions and was 17th when the next caution came out on lap 67.

As Biffle brought the 3M Ford Fusion to pit road, the team prepared to give him four fresh tires, fuel, an air pressure adjustment and a spring rubber adjustment.  They lost only one position in the pits and Biffle restarted 18th on lap 71.  The changes didn’t seem to help so when an opportunity to pit came during a caution on lap 76, the team decided to make a major adjustment to the rear end of the car to help tighten it up through the turns.  The team sent Biffle out 28th for the restart on lap 80.

While struggling with a still ill-handling car, Biffle brushed the wall on lap 90.  Despite minor fender damage, Biffle was able to maintain his position and was 27th when a caution on lap 117 for debris allowed him to pit for repair.  After several minutes of repair to the fender and another air pressure adjustment, Biffle returned to the track in the 32nd position for the restart on lap 122.

Biffle picked up a couple of positions after the restart but stalled out around the top-30 and remained there for several laps.  He had been lapped shortly after brushing the wall but was able to pick up the lucky dog position just before a caution on lap 175.  He made his way up to the 24th position after a pit stop and when a caution came out on lap 189, the team decided to try to pick up some track position with strategy in the pits.  They went for fuel only and sent Biffle out 12th for the restart on lap 194.
Shortly after the restart, it was clear that fuel only was not the way to go.  By lap 206, Biffle and the 3M Ford were back in the 25th position.  The team decided to make a spring change and as they were one of the last teams on the lead lap, Biffle still restarted from the 25th position on lap 214.  Throughout the remainder of the race, Biffle continued to hold on to an ill-handling racecar.  He lost two laps when a caution came shortly after he made a scheduled green flag stop on lap 277 and one more as the leaders began to lap the field later in the race.

Despite the hard work of the team during at total of 12 pit stops throughout the race, Biffle was finally credited with a 27th place finish in the 337-lap event.

“It just wasn’t our night,” said Biffle.  “We ran well in practice and I thought the 3M Ford was going to be pretty good in the race.  It just got loose early on and we couldn’t get it right from that point on.  I hate it for 3M, it was a big race for them and their last primary of this season but we just announced this week that they’ll be the primary sponsor for most of the races next season, so hopefully we’ll make up for it next year.”

With the 27th place finish in Concord, Biffle and the team remain 16th in the Nextel Cup point standings and trail 13th by 142 points.  They are only 20 points behind Casey Mears in the 14th position and five points behind Ryan Newman in the 15th position.  The team will return to the track on Sunday, October 21st at Martinsville Speedway.
