Bank of America 500 - David Ragan Notes
David Ragan
NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series: Bank of America 500
Saturday October 13
7:00 PM Eastern - ABC/PRN

Fast Facts

David Ragan competed in the Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in May 2007. He started 13th and finished 37th after being involved in an accident.
Ragan is currently second in the Raybestos Rookie of the Year points race. He trails Juan Pablo Montoya by 15 points.
Since 1975, only two Raybestos Rookies have won pole positions for the fall race at Charlotte: Jeff Gordon (1993) and Ward Burton (1994).

David Ragan
Team: No. 6 AAA Insurance Ford Fusion
Crew Chief: Jimmy Fennig
Chassis: Primary: RK- 394 Previously ran at Indy; finished 16th, Fontana; finished 12th
Back-up: RK- 201 Previously ran at Michigan; finished 21st

Ragan on racing at Lowe’s Motor Speedway:“I’m definitely looking forward to going to Charlotte for the second time this year. We had a great run going there in the spring and just ended up getting caught up in somebody else’s mess. We have really improved a great deal on the mile and a half tracks since the beginning of the year so I am looking forward to bringing home a good finish at home and for all of the 50 million AAA members out there who are watching the race this weekend.”

Crew Chief Jimmy Fennig on racing at Lowe’s Motor Speedway:“We are taking the same car to Charlotte that we took to Indy and California. It is a great racecar that we plan on running quite a bit more this year. I think Charlotte is one of the tracks that we have left on the schedule this year where David could really bring home a good finish. He was doing a great job back in May when we raced there and just got caught in a back situation ending our day early. We are still just outside of the top 20 in points and it is still our goal to make our way into it before the end of the season.”

Man.  Wish that spotter would have told David he was the center of a 3-wide.  He only said "3-wide".  David didn't know anyone was on the outside.

I hope Martinsville is kinder to the 6 AAA team.

I'm a little surprised to see David's name and the word "Brilliant" in the same sentence on the RFR home page....

Ragan Brilliant at Charlotte
David Ragan and the No. 6 Discount Tire Ford Fusion
Lowe's Motor Speedway/October 12, 2007

CONCORD, N.C. (October 12, 2007) – David Ragan and the No. 6 Discount Tire team had a great run in Saturday's Dollar General 300 NASCAR Busch Series race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Ragan qualified 10th and battled through a star studded field to capture his eighth top-10 finish of the season.

Ragan and the Discount Tire team looked to change their recent misfortunes at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Ragan started the race in 10th position but lost four positions the first 30 laps of the race.  On lap 20, Ragan commented the Ford Fusion was arrow tight. Ragan also said the back end of the car felt like it was going to snap around on entry into the corners. Crew chief Mike Kelley told Ragan to be patient and take it one lap at a time. The first caution of the night flew on lap 26. Ragan was ordered to the pit stall on lap 29 for adjustments. Kelley called for four tires, fuel and an air pressure adjustment.

On the restart on lap 30, Ragan was in the 14th position.  The adjustments paid off. Ragan gained four positions over the next 30 laps. He settled in to the ninth position on lap 64. On lap 69, Ragan was the fastest car on the track. Ragan battled NASCAR’s elite for the next 20 laps. A myriad of cautions slowed the action but Ragan stayed consistent and hit his marks. A debris caution flew on lap 85. Ragan was called to the pit stall for major adjustments on lap 86. Kelley ordered four tires, fuel and an air pressure adjustment. Ragan exited the pit stall in the eighth position.

On lap 96, Ragan commented the Ford Fusion was loose into the corners and tight off. Ragan’s handling problems did not deter him from gaining valuable track position. On lap 115, Ragan was in the fifth position. The seventh caution of the night flew on lap 125. Ragan entered the pit stall on lap 127 in the seventh position.  Kelley ordered four tires, fuel and an air pressure adjustment. Ragan exited the pit stall in the 12th position. Many teams took two tires but the Discount Tire team took four, a strategy that paid dividends at the end of the race.

On lap 162, Ragan said the car was extremely loose. He was able to maintain the 11th position despite an ill-handling race car. The race was marred by two late wrecks that collected nine cars. Kelley told Ragan to block out everything and finish the race.

Ragan’s Ford Fusion came to life on lap 194. Ragan got up on the wheel and drove the Discount Tire Ford Fusion through the lead pack, passing cars one by one. He gained five positions the last three laps of the race. Ragan and the Discount Tire team captured a sixth-place finish. The seventh top-10 finish of the 2007 race season.

“We had a great run tonight. The Discount Tire team battled all night long,” said Ragan. “Our Ford Fusion was a top-five car from the start of the race. Aside from the mild handling problems during the middle of the race it was a smooth night on the track and pit road. I hope we can keep up this momentum the last four races of the year.”

The sixth-place finish leaves Ragan fifth in the Busch Series point standings.  Ragan and the team will return to action Saturday, October 27 at Memphis Motorsports Park.

Ragan Remains 22nd in Points Despite Disappointing Day
David Ragan and the No. 6 AAA Ford Fusion
Lowe's Motor Speedway/October 13, 2007

CONCORD, NC (October 13, 2007) – David Ragan and the No. 6 AAA Team had a decent car heading into Saturday’s Bank of America 500 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.  After qualifying 31st on Thursday evening Ragan finished out second practice on Friday as 13th quickest.

The field rolled off pit road and began their pace laps around 7:30pm ET ON Saturday evening followed by the green flag at 7:45pm ET.

Ragan immediately started charging forward, gaining three positions on the first lap.  He remained in the top-30 until lap 20 when the No. 41 car came up on Ragan’s outside making it three wide.  Ragan, not knowing he was there, made contact sending his AAA Ford into the outside wall.

He immediately radioed to his team that the right front of his AAA Ford Fusion had been knocked off and he had no brakes.  The No. 6 machine was towed to the garage where the AAA pit crew got to work on it right away.

There was a good bit of damage done to the AAA Ford so the team worked as quickly as possible allowing Ragan to return to the track on lap 125, 105 laps down.

Throughout the remainder of the night the AAA pit crew and crew chief, Jimmy Fennig, did what they could to make their race car drive better.  Ragan struggled with it being too tight, therefore adjustments to the wedge and air pressure were made to help with that.

By the end of the 334 lap event Ragan was able to pick up three spots and finished in 40th place.

“We were backing up a little bit,” said Ragan.  “Our AAA Ford was a little free and you’re just trying to bide a time waiting for the first caution and we’re very disappointed to be the first caution.  I guess the 41 had a good run on the outside.  I didn’t know he was there, just pinched him up into the wall.  I really feel bad to hurt his day.  He didn’t do anything wrong but just racing too hard too early on.  Just one of those things.”

Ragan is currently 22nd in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series point standings.  He is second in the Raybestos Rookie of the Year race.
Ragan will compete next in the Subway 500 at Martinsville Speedway on October 21st at 1:00pm ET.
