Saturday October 13
7:00 PM Eastern - ABC/PRN

Fast Facts

Carl Edwards and the No. 99 Office Depot team are currently sixth in the Chase for the NEXTEL Cup with 5485 points, 205 points behind the leader, Jeff Gordon
Edwards will make his fifth Cup start at Lowe’s Motor Speedway this weekend. In his previous starts, he has achieved two top fives and four top-10 finishes. His average finish at Charlotte is 7.8
Edwards best finish at Lowe’s is third place, captured twice – once in May of 2005 and again in May of 2006
The No. 99 Office Depot team will be unloading chassis No. RK-320. Edwards raced this car to a second-place finish at Fontana in September of this year
Office Depot Store No. 699 from Muskogee, OK is this week’s sales winner and will ride along on the No. 99 at Charlotte this weekend

Carl Edwards
Team: No.99 Office Depot Ford Fusion
Crew Chief: Bob Osborne
Chassis: RK-320 previously raced California Speedway – started 19th and finished second

Edwards on racing at Lowe’s Motor Speedway:
"Charlotte is going to be a tough track, but a lot of fun. I’m really excited to get back to a track that I feel comfortable at, in an Office Depot Ford that I know will be fast. We’re bringing our California car this weekend – the car we finished second in, so I’m confident we’ll be good. We need a strong finish this weekend to make gains in the ‘Chase’ and try to move up in the points.”

Crew Chief Bob Osborne on racing at Lowe’s Motor Speedway:
"We’re looking forward to Charlotte, we’re bringing what we think will be a competitive car and hopefully we’ll get a strong finish. We have a strong Office Depot team and a driver capable of winning races, so hopefully we’ll be able to continue our momentum this week and make gains towards the Championship. We’ve lost some ground over the past couple of weeks, but we’re still in the race and we’re not going to give up.”

Edwards Dominated at Charlotte, But Wrecks Out
Carl Edwards, No. 60 Scotts Winterguard Ford Fusion
Lowe's Motor Speedway/October 12, 2007

CONCORD, N.C. (October 12, 2007) – Carl Edwards and the No. 60 Scotts Winterguard team experienced a mixture of domination, cautions, cool temperatures and bad luck.  The team definitely had their Ford Fusion dialed in for what turned out to be a wildly wacky Friday night under the bright lights at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in front of most of the racing community’s families and friends.  Edwards’ Ford was the most dominating car on the 1.5-mile oval for over 60 laps, that is, up until he got caught up in the seventh of 10 cautions.  Edwards and the Scotts team looked like they were going to win the Dollar General 300 and had an opportunity to wrap up the overall driver’s championship until they got caught up in a big wreck on lap 134 and finished in a very disappointing 33rd place.

Edwards started the race in the 5th position.  His Ford Fusion was fast right off the hauler.  Edwards led the race three times in a dominating fashion for a total of 60 laps.  He was able to dodge the first six cautions and the Scotts crew performed flawlessly during pit stops.  It looked like the race was theirs.

Edwards was leading the field before pitting under caution on lap 128.  The No. 60 team decided to **** with an adjustment that they had done in the earlier practice session.  They took a few extra seconds to put in a spring rubber to improve the handling of their Ford Fusion.  This sent them back nine positions to 10th for the restart on lap 133.

Just moments later the reigning Nextel Cup Champion Jimmie Johnson got loose and slid sideways right in front of Edwards, causing a chain reaction crash that collected Edwards and ultimately ended his race for the evening.

Jeff Burton survived the wreck-filled race on the 1.5-mile oval and won his 4th Busch Series race of the 2007 season.  Edwards and the Scotts team collected their second DNF of the season and finished 68 laps down in a very disappointing 33rd position.  Edwards’ crash delayed his clinching the NASCAR Busch Series Championship.  The Scotts team and Edwards will try to clinch the championship in two weeks in Memphis.

“Jimmie (Johnson) got loose.  I was gonna miss him, but somebody just got me in the left rear,” stated Edwards.  “I did the best I could to save it because I didn’t want to just lock it down right there – so many guys were racing so hard I didn’t want to get hit, and I ended up wrecking it.  We had the fastest car.   It was a great day to be driving a Ford Fusion.  Greg Biffle was awesome.  We were great.  It’s not been a good year for lawns and it’s not been a good second half of the season for this Scotts Fusion.  It’s just too bad it ended up like that because Pierre (Kuettel) and the guys did a great job.”

“What a night for the Scotts Winterguard Ford Fusion.  Had highs and highs and lows and lows.  I’m not going to say we completely dominated this race, but we were running really strong.  Probably had led, I’m sure, the most laps for the evening.  It’s just disappointing to have the 48 car just lose it in front of us.  Thought we had it saved and it just got away from us in the end.  Problem is that it hurt a good racecar.  We’ll go back and fix it.  We’ll go back to Memphis and wrap this thing up,” commented Crew Chief Pierre Kuettel.

Next week the Busch Series takes the weekend off.  Edwards will run in Martinsville for the NEXTEL Cup Series.  Edwards maintained the lead in the overall NASCAR Busch Series points standings.  He is currently ahead of second place driver David Reutimann by 638 points.  The No. 60 team will run the Scotts Winterguard Ford Fusion next in Memphis on October 27, 2007.

Edwards Keeps Chase Hopes Alive in Caution-Filled Race at Lowe's
Office Depot Team Captures Top-Five Finish and Again Make Gains in ‘Chase’ Standings
Carl Edwards and the No. 99 Office Depot Ford Fusion Racing Team

Lowe's Motor Speedway/October 13, 2007

CONCORD, N.C. (October 13, 2007) – After a few disappointing weeks at the track, Carl Edwards and the No. 99 Office Depot team bounced back with a top-five finish in Saturday night’s Bank of America 500 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. The No. 99 team worked to find speed on Thursday during practice and qualifying but gradually got better as the weekend progressed. By the start of Saturday evening’s 500-mile event, Edwards and crew chief Bob Osborne felt that with a little work, the car was capable of a top-10 finish. The crew worked hard throughout the night, improving the handling of the car with every stop.  With smart pit strategy, the right adjustments and just a little luck, the Office Depot team managed to capture a fifth-place finish and gain yet another spot in the ‘Chase’ standings.

Under cool, clear skies and in front of nearly 165, 000 fans, Ryan Newman led the field to the green flag at 7:37 p.m. ET. Edwards started 18th and knew that he and his No. 99 team were facing a long night on their way to a top five. Committed to being patient, Edwards settled in for the 334-lap race.

During the first half of the race, Edwards’ No. 99 Office Depot Ford Fusion didn’t appear to be a top five car, as he reported that his Ford “needed more grip.” In hopes of resolving the handling problems, Osborne called Edwards to pit road on six different occasions in the first 176 laps of 15-caution flag-event, each time under caution. On each stop the No. 99 crew made slight air pressure and chassis adjustments to Edwards’ Roush Fenway Racing machine expecting to remedy the handling problems. Though the tweaks seemed to help the car’s performance on shorter runs, the Office Depot Ford would continue to lose grip on the longer runs, preventing Edwards from gaining track positions. Despite battling the handling of the Office Depot Fusion, Edwards maintained a top-20 running position.

On lap 278, just 56 laps from the finish, another caution fell allowing Edwards to once again make his way down pit road for what was planned to be the final stop of the night. Edwards entered the pits in 13th place and exited in 10th position after receiving four tires, fuel and a minor air pressure adjustment. Finally running inside the top 10, Edwards reported the car as being the best it had been all night and finally had what he needed to race inside the top 10. Edwards was running eighth on lap 321 when a blown engine from the No. 66 leaked oil on the track and brought out yet another caution and ultimately a red flag.

Strategy would come into play during this period. Since previously stopping on lap 278, Edwards had enough fuel to make it to lap 334.  However if there were to be a green, white, checker-finish fuel mileage would be an issue and Osborne directed Edwards to use long gears to conserve fuel. Fuel wasn’t the only concern for Osborne, as tire wear and track position also came into play. When the race restarted with just nine laps to go the question was whether or not Edwards should pit for tires.  When pit road opened on lap 325, Edwards kept the No. 99 on the track – a smart move as none of the leaders pitted.

When green flag racing commenced on lap 329 Edwards was scored in seventh place, set up for a five lap shoot out. However, an accident on lap 332 brought out the 15th and final yellow flag of the night and set the field up for a green, white, checker finish. Edwards held his own on the restart and managed to hold on for fifth place.
Jeff Gordon once again dominated the NEXTEL Cup Series, capturing his second consecutive victory. Clint Bowyer finished second, followed by Kyle Busch and Jeff Burton. Edwards completed the top five.

The NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series head to Martinsville, Va. this weekend for short track racing action at the Martinsville Speedway. The Subway 500, race six in the ‘Chase’ for the NEXTEL Cup is slated for Sunday, October 21 at 1:00 p.m. (ET). ABC television and MRN radio affiliates will carry the live broadcast.

CARL EDWARDS/BANK OF AMERICA 500 QUOTE:

“This was great for the Office Depot team.  We did not have a fifth-place car, so we’re very fortunate to be fifth.  We were barely a top 15 car, so I’ve just got to thank my crew -- everybody on this Office Depot team.  That was a long one there at the end.  All sorts of things are happening and we ended up fifth.  It’s a great points run for us and we really salvaged something today.  We got very lucky.  I definitely had a good time tonight at the end.  That’s cool.  We should have five-lap sprints like that all the time.  It was a blast.”

“We’re heading to Martinsville and I’m glad we ran well at Charlotte. I have a tough time at Martinsville, but it’s about time we had a good race there and hopefully this will be the one.  We haven’t had a good Cup race there yet, but we’ve got a great car of tomorrow program, so it should be good.”
